Objective : Empathy

At the heart of An Untoward Odyssey is 'Migrant X' - a symbolic representation of the millions who have traversed unknown paths in search of hope.

This project aims to revive their memories, allowing us to sit beside them, to understand their trials, and to view the world through their eyes.

Process & Ideations

Researching within the context of socio-political issues led us to focus on refugee movements and immigration issues. When considering how the experiences of ethnic groups are best presented, studied, or archived, museums emerged as a key point of interest.

The discussions highlighted that the conventional methods of presenting information in museums are often dry, prompting us to explore ways to incorporate empathy into a museum exhibit.

A visitor's touch that could open a dynamic narrative that worked towards impressing an emotional perspective onto the visitor.

Interaction

In the exhibit, 'Migrant X' comes to life through a blend of technology and human interaction. Utilizing Arduino boards and motion sensors, we crafted a responsive eyelid-like mechanism.

This feature activates, revealing a screen with a video narrative, when a visitor empathetically places their hand on Migrant X's shoulder, symbolizing trust and connection.

Space Interaction

The spatial composition and layout were planned to replicate a museum ambiance and enhance visual impact from the moment of entry.

Initially, visitors encounter a motion poster, that essentially serves as an information standie that also provides a call-to-action to trigger the film projection.

The Film

Our visual narrative delves deeply into the migrant experience, capturing not only the physical challenges of migration but also the psychological and emotional trials faced along the way.

Camera work capturing movement across barren terrains, untouched paths, and lonesome figures, is woven with off limits footage sourced from around the web.

This was scripted as the personal visual journey of a Migrant searching for a lost homeland, setting off flashes of the unfiltered refugee trauma across the world.

Projection Mapping

To craft a dynamic motion poster, we utilized projection mapping with an Epson projector on cloths draped over a metal rod, creating a vivid display.

The film was projected onto a plain, clean cloth for clarity, ensuring the visuals were sharp and engaging.

Dynamic Identity Design

In envisioning the future of identity design, I was inspired by the concept of a dynamic, non-static presence in a 3D space. The identity I created embodies this futuristic vision, where logos aren't just stationary but are fluid and dynamic, moving through 3d space.
